The Witch Doctor's Wife

Stuff I learned from reading The Witch Doctor's Wife by Tamar Myers:

The European system of telling time imposes needless stress on people. "Who had a right to assign numbers to the sun's journey across the sky?" Clocks and wristwatches made people hurry. (Pg 79).

The female spotted hyena is dominant over the male spotted hyena. She even has a pseudo-phallus 5 to 7 inches long. Female spotted hyenas have also been observed mating with other females. (Pg 112)

The civet cat is not a cat at all, but a small spotted omnivore. They excrete a scent which historically was used in perfumes. =(

"It is easier to grow a stone than to restore a reputation." (Pg 159)

Ostrich have the biggest eyes of all land animals, including elephants. (Pg 163)

Cape buffalo calves form strong bonds with their mothers and their clans, a fact that enables handicapped members of the herd to survive. (Pg 172)

Congo gray parrots are thought to be the smartest of all birds. Some researchers claim that these parrots can even associate words with their meanings. (Pg 178).

Giant pangolins are mammals that are covered in thick scales instead of fur. They give birth to offspring one at a time. The baby's scales are soft when they are born, but harden quickly. (Pg 194).

The bonobo is our closest relative. Bonobos resolve conflicts through sex rather than aggression. (Pg 202). Great proof for the "Make love, not war" approach! =)

Barking is not natural to the dog family; humans trained them to do this to warn of approaching danger. (Pg 217).

"Women saw everything, and they thought about everything. The result was wisdom. For men, this was a frightening state of affairs, which is why they insisted on holding onto power." (Pg 217)

Hippos are strict vegetarians. (Pg 255)

"The bible made it very clear that Jesus was a Jewish witch doctor; he healed the sick with incantations, cured the blind with potions made from mud and spit, and performed feats of magic, such as walking on water." (Pg 269).
